How to correctly apply preserver to my log cabin?

Timber is, by its very nature, a porous material. That means moisture can penetrate the wood and, in the right circumstances, this can lead to mould or even rot! Treating your log cabin with a high-quality wood preserver is essential to maintaining the lifespan of the timber.

You will need to treat the cabin both internally and externally to ensure the wood is completely protected, we recommend a minimum of two coats of preserver to your log cabin. You may be asking, why do I need to treat the inside? Our cabins are popular for their flexibility and there is a wide variety of uses for them, most of which involve someone being in the cabin. Heat from people, pets and electronics creates moisture which can lead to condensation. As timber is porous, this means moisture could be getting to the wood from the inside, as well as the outside. You can only treat the cabin after it is installed due to the precise machining of the joins, so do pay particular attention to the corners (inside and out!) and the notched areas as well as the bottom few logs.

Always conduct a test patch to ensure product suitability before applying preserver, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the container at all times.

Wood should be frost-free when treated, and the product should not be applied in damp conditions or if rain is expected. The cabin preserver is a ready-to-use product and should not be diluted. Ensure the temperature of both the wood and the product is between 10°C and 30°C.

For professional use, the product can be applied by dipping or flow coating using specialised facilities and equipment, or by spraying in enclosed devices. For standard DIY use, apply the product with a synthetic brush.

- Ensure good ventilation when handling the product and when drying freshly treated wood.

- Keep freshly treated wood covered or protected from rain until fully dry.

- When applying to in-situ timbers and while surfaces are drying, avoid contaminating soil and surface waters with the product.

- Prevent release into the environment; do not empty into drains or allow the product to reach aquatic environments, soil, or the sewer system.

- Protect soil, plants, and water sources from splashes of the product.
