How much space do you recommend I leave between the deck boards to allow for expansion?

Return to all questions

Leaving a gap between boards is important, this ensures the decking will have space to drain, dry, expand, and contract, without causing the wood any damage. It’s important to leave the right size gap: if the gap is too small, there won’t be enough space. If the gap is too big, the gap can become a safety hazard. We recommend leaving approx. 2-5mm between the boards and using a spacer to ensure consistency.
